The role of music as a powerful agent for physical, emotional, and mental change and empowerment is well documented by researchers across a variety of disciplines, from neuroscience to music therapy to counseling to medicine.
We currently provide weekly innovative music programs that promote healing & wellness for those recovering from trauma, addiction, grief, isolation, pain and mental health conditions.
Musicians facilitate live music to provide opportunities for program participants to experience the physical and psychological benefits of live music listening and encourage the development of musical leisure skills. Musical leisure skills may involve developing instrument playing and singing skills, recording & producing original songs, and connecting with community resources to participate in activities such as choirs and bands.
Music therapists lead group music interventions that assist program participants in progressing toward individualized goals for healing, growth, health, and wellness. In addition to the benefits of live music listening and the development of musical leisure skills, participants gain experiences and tools for progressing towards emotional self-regulation, self-expression, improved educational learning outcomes, establishing & building strong interpersonal connections with others, non-pharmaceutical symptom management, and much more.

... It’s been amazing to witness the results. As someone begins to express themselves, with either music or art, it gives them an avenue and widens the gap for them to walk through, to begin to discuss some of the other things that may be plaguing them, there becomes this open window into their heart and into their soul...
I perform some of their favorite songs and encourage them to sing along—they actually do! They love participating in group songs; I often have a choir of voices singing with me!
This has helped our clients explore various sober fun activities, increases coping skills and emotional regulation, helps them to explore hobbies in the form of music, and also helps them increase healthy communication skills through working with staff and peers in developing song lyrics and sharing personal experiences with the art of music.
Already word is spreading and already the members of the REID foundation who arrive here each week are making a profound impact on the participants. These women are learning new and different ways of expressing themselves and channeling their emotions in a productive manner, but beyond sessions is where the magic really happens. Because they are carrying those lessons with them into the compound. When they see each other, they are no longer strangers. Instead, they are a part of something, and they’ve developed a mindfulness for one another. Thank you a million times, thank you, for what you are doing that will undoubtedly change lives.

This program found what seemed to be an unconventional home at Ohio Women’s Reformatory at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, this has been the most natural and important place to institute a program like this. Supporting expecting mothers as they navigate the stress and strain of prison and attempt to bring their child into the world while recovering and healing themselves in an incarceration setting, has been transformative. Most especially valued is the opportunity to write and record a song for their baby, so that no matter their situation, sentence length or post birth plans for their child; they can express their love, hopes and dreams for their unborn child. After the delivery, music therapy programming is offered to support them adjusting to their new situation. Whether they are able to join a program where inmates can live with their children or facing another person raising their child temporarily, or in some cases permanently. The song writing - that ability to express all the things they want to say to their baby, it is powerful and empowering for the women and amazing to support.

The music therapy program… has been an amazing experience for both clients and staff. It gives the kids different ways to communicate thoughts and emotions and promotes a positive energy in treatment. It is so awesome to see how the kids use music therapy as a jumping point for them to create, learn and develop new skills and passions.
Through all the trauma, music was always there for me.
